Our Poetry Cafe is scheduled for Friday, September 17th at 8:30. It will last about an hour. We will share some poetry we've learned about and some the students have written. We will also have brunch following this. Please mark your calendars. We'd love for you to be there. If you'd like to donate mini-muffins, orange/apple juice, fruit, cups, napkins, or plates, please let me know. I hope to see you there. :)

Last week was awesome! We learned more about each other and became friends throughout the week. We were also busy during large group time and in centers. We made glogs, did some research about energy, and participated in our first science activity. Our class has the best students EVER! Fifth grade rocks!
Below are the major concepts we will be studying this week.
Language Arts Poetry(rhyme and meter, tone/mood, elements of a story in poetry, and figurative language) Flocabulary(1st part of Unit 1) Review of verbs(action, helping, linking, and verb tenses) Comprehension skills(inner voice and strategies to use when you lose your way)
Math Number puzzles Math workshop Prime factorization Problem solving Multiplication strategies(larger numbers)
Our first math test will be Thursday, Aug. 30th. Please review the vocabulary words and sample problems in your math notebook. Your workbook is also a good resource to use to study. (Be sure you know the difference between a multiple and factor, and that you can identify and explain what prime and composite numbers are. You should also be able to explain squares, and know how to find the squares and square root of a number.)
I am so excited about tomorrow! We are going to begin our year with the IB transdisciplinary theme "How We Express Ourselves" with our central idea being "Poetry is a unique form of expression." This unit will be ~ 4 weeks long.

It's hard to believe that in two weeks I'll be finding it hard to sleep because the first day of school will be tomorrow. The excitement usually keeps me awake until all hours of the night. Woo hoo! I can't wait. There are so many fun things in store for you all. Fifth grade is the best!
I hope to see y'all at the meet and greet next Thursday, August 16th. :) Bring your supplies, and we'll set up your desks and lockers. Enjoy the last few days of your summer breaks, and I'll see you soon.
